Kolam Projects aims to make a difference in the lives of families with kids who have Specific Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

The Kolam Projects philosophy is to create, curate and make available information and other resources that will help families of children with learning differences make informed choices about their child’s present and future.

Kolam Projects is a not-for-profit organization and does not seek to monetize any aspect of its work.

We plan to work in these sub-areas:

Increase awareness
Less than 10% of children SLD get diagnosed. Unless diagnosed the child will not get the SLD tailored education and learning environment he or she requires to do well at school. This requires awareness about the condition, how it can be identified & tested and the learning and home environment appropriate to a child with SLD. We plan work that will increase awareness using film and other media.
Information hub for LD resources
There is a dire need across India for up-to-date reliable information on questions such as:
  • Where are the SLD friendly schools near where we live?
  • Where can I get my child tested for SLD
  • Are there qualified remedial teachers near where we live?
  • Are there organizations in my city which can counsel me on the way forward for my child?
    • and similar questions. We plan to create and curate a corpus of reliable information which can help families quickly take the appropriate informed decision for their child.
Increase institutional capacity
India lacks capacity across the country in helping children and families of children with SLD. We don’t have sufficient institutions to test children for SLD, for remedial management, schools that are trained in teaching children with SLD, instiutions that can create instructional material suitable for SLD children etc. We would like to see how we can help building institutional capacity.

About Us

We are parents of a child who has SLD and ADHD. We have realized that there is a lot that is needed to be done to make India friendlier to people with learning differences. The Kolam Projects idea arose out of that thought.

My first career was in advertising. For the last decade I have been a volunteer at a Suicide Prevention NGO. I have also worked in the area of elder care and cancer palliative care.
